Creating Ella Bella – part three

My wife’s obsession with all things vintage was a huge help with developing a way forward for Ella Bella Ballerina, and she threw herself into the retro world of printing with a passion.

She loves Retro fabrics, bless her, and all things Cath Kidston…

She would hate to have to admit it but she spends shocking amounts of time looking at pictures on all sorts of blogs on houses, fabrics, tea things, chintz and general clutter posted by vintage retro Kidstonites. I got lots of reference material and ideas from the images on such sites, and by looking at my wife’s collection of vintage dresses. Roses feature prominantly in the story of Sleeping Beauty, which the publisher decided should be the first ballet to feature. All the strands were beginning to take shape. But the designing of a fabric is a bit different to a book. And I wasn’t going to be using silk-screen. I studied these roses, made notes of how they were structured from separate layers… considered and lost sleep over the clever design… and learned to respect and admire something I kind of took for granted.
