Noye’s Fludde: The Rest is Noise…

The Guardian Newspaper has created a lovely short film of the dress rehearsal for the production of Noye’s Fludde that I designed earlier this year. The performances took place in the magnificent Tewkesbury Abbey, and were part of the Cheltenham Music Festival, of which I was guest director.

This film is part of an ongoing series called “The Rest Is Noise”, which started as a book on 20th century music by Alex Ross (music critic for The New Yorker) and became a series of South Bank concerts, and now films.

In the film you’ll see glimpses of the designs, and meet some of the team involved. It was the most extraordinary, unforgettable experience and I’m very grateful to have a souvenir of this magical and moving pageant of pictures and music.

Happy memories. I’ve steered clear of several opportunities to hear more Fluddes this year – having NEVER encountered it live before yours – because I want this one to resonate. As its Wagnerian climax always will…

You are far too kind. And of course this was a hugely collaborative effort. But I’m touched by your alliegence. It resonates with me too, for many reasons… and leaves me wanting more!
