This week I visited two schools around Telford in Shropshire for the fabulous Pop Up Festival. Pop Up is a unique approach to children’s literary festivals. They arrange all sorts of pop up visits and outreach schemes to try to inspire children from all backgrounds, and the big festival days are festivals with difference!
I was fortunate to be partnered with a scenic artist from the Royal Opera House, Lucy Griffiths. She was a brilliant colleague and we made a great double act as we rolled out real artists canvas on an enormous scale and led the children through the techniques and skills of the Great Masters. Four classes were involved and between them they tackled Pointillism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Turner’s Romantic visual world.

These pictures are all work in progress and the final pieces – which are stunning – will be part of a magical living, breathing art gallery for children at the Pop Up Festival at Iron bridge Museum on Easter Sunday. There will be all sorts of authors and illustrators taking part – Chris Mould and Jane Ray are confirmed. And it is completely FREE. So Lucy and I will look forward to welcoming you to our gallery where art and fun and stories await you!
