Painting for Tanita Tikaram

Once in a (rare) while, you meet someone with a depth, with a heart, that stops you in your tracks. They are often the quiet, discreet people; artistic, gifted and overwhelmingly modest. You know, at once, that they have a gentle influence on those around them, of kindness, and goodness. And you know that you are changed too, simply by being lucky enough to be acquainted.

This perfectly describes Tanita Tikaram. A superb singer-songwriter, creating jewels of poetry and harmony, delivered in her extraordinary voice, of many colours , and inflections, warm, deep, vulnerable and rich. It wraps around you like an embrace.

Last night at the Barbican Centre, she delivered an astonishing two hour concert, with her brilliant band and assorted guests. Jazz singer Ian Shaw was a fabulous voice for her to blend with. Helen O’Hara’s violin touched the soul, and all the musicians were wonderful. She had one other guest… and that was me. It was quite a thrill to arrive at The Barbican and see this poster!

Such is Tanita’s kindness and imagination, she invited me up on stage to join her for two songs. Not to sing (that is too awful to contemplate!), but to paint.

This is a huge departure from my usual “painting to music” project. From Tchaikovsky to Tikaram is an interesting progression! But why not? This is music of such quality, beauty and meaning, it was an extraordinary honour to be offered this opportunity.  To stand on the stage of the Barbican Hall and respond to such touching words as her famous Cathedral Song and the beat of Glass Love Train was thrilling. It was terrifying too! But what an experience. Truly unforgettable. A lovely audience, a great event… and to cap the evening, the art was auctioned for Side by Side with Refugees, raising a swift £400.

Tanita is a rare singer, who is so generous and giving in performance that you almost forget how much hard work it must be. The intelligent and varied songs, and her communication with the audience is quite unique in my experience.

I hope she’ll be performing again soon. If you get the chance… GO! She is wonderful live.

Thank you Tanita, Thank you to her band and all those behind the scenes pulling the strands together.

Here’s a little snippet of Cathedral Song!

For me, it’s back in time now, about 350 years, for my next big event: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the new Broadway Theatre in Letchworth Garden City!
