Just days before Jean Sibelius’ 150th birthday, the Docklands Sinfonia present this exceptional tribute to this greatest of all Scandinavian composers.
The concert opens with his much love Karelia Suite, and this is followed by a world premiere of a new ‘cello concerto by Michael Heath.
The main work will be the beautiful and dramatic Lemminkainen Suite, rarely heard complete, and drawn from Finland’s epic cycle of the mythology, The Kalevala. Full of Sibelius’ unique sound world, the melancholic Swan of Tuonela is perhaps the only movement to have been widely performed. As a whole, this four piece work is almost like a magnificent programmatic symphony, and this is a very rare opportunity to hear it performed live.
To make the occasion truly unforgettable, children’s author and illustrator James Mayhew will retell passages from the Kalevala legends before each of the four movements, and as the orchestra plays, he will create haunting and expressive paintings in time to the music. These will be projected onto a screen for all to see.
