As I prepare for my debut with the UK’s newest professional orchestra, SÓN, I am experimenting with colours and materials and words wrapped up in Shakespeare and Mendelssohn. In case you are not familiar with my work as an artist for musicians, well… read on!
SÓN is a Southampton based orchestra, created by maestro Robin Browning, with whom I have worked as a concert presenter/live artist for 10 years. And he is the very best colleague imaginable and a very fine conductor. His mission, to establish a brand new orchestra, is visionary and courageous, and I am full of admiration. With two sold out grown-up concerts behind them, Robin felt it was time to reach out to younger audiences.
And so, on June 18th, just before Midsummer, we will together offer a unique matinee concert for families. In Shakespeare’s anniversary year, we have chosen to present A Midsummer Night’s Dream – the music of Mendelssohn, inspired by the play. I’ll retell the story, and also, as the music plays, paint illustrations, live on stage, trying to match the ebb and flow of this enchanting score.
As I was rehearsing, Robin made a little time lapse film, which gives you some idea of what to expect – and the art will be projected in real time as I paint, on a screen above the orchestra.
